Joe’s Crab Shack Eat at Home Salmon – Review

So I love me some fish, especially salmon!  The kids like it but I would eat it a couple of nights a week if I could.  Last time I was out shopping I looked a bit more in the frozen meal section then I normally do and found these Joe’s Crab Shack meals for 2.  Sometimes there are nights when the kids eat sandwiches or frozen meals so I decided to grab a couple of these for the hubby and I.

The other night the kids really weren’t too hungry after grazing on popcorn, sandwiches and such, so Mike and I decided to try one of these.  He took care of the cooking of it so I have no pictures but he said it was really easy and you make everything in the microwave.  While it was cooking it sure did smell good!

The one he made was the Salmon with Jasmine rice and Broccoli… oh and it has Honey Mustard sauce in it but I don’t care of it so only Mike put it on his.  Let me tell you…. that Jasmine rice was AWESOME!  I could have eaten like 5 more helpings of it.  And the salmon was not dried out at all, it was actually really good.  I probably should have made a creamy butter sauce or something for mine since I didn’t use the sauce, but I ate it with the rice so I enjoyed it.  My only pet peeve was the broccoli, it was still a little crunchy for me, but we could have fixed that by cooking it a bit longer.  It didn’t ruin the meal, I just gave a bit more to Mike.

I picked mine up at Wal-Mart and it was around $8, not bad for a full meal.  I think that is the second thing that impressed me after the great taste, you get a LOT of food.  It filled me up for sure!  I was worried when I saw the size of the fish, but with the rice and veggie, it was perfect.  And really considering some of those bags of meals are $8-$9 and feed 3-4 people this isn’t that much more and I think you get more.  Highly recommend this one for sure!  Very impressed with this being a frozen dinner.

We have another one of these to try, I can’t remember which one but it’s a white fish.  I am hoping it’s as good as this one was, now I just want an excuse to buy more!

the fish was over cooked and rubbery and dry. fishy taste. the jasmine rice was salty and the frozen broccoli was plain frozen broccoli. please buy fresh food. evwn a lean cuisine or a healthy choice meal has edible fish for about 2 or 4 dollara this costs more is awful.!!!!
a frozen brocoli steamer bag is 99cents. a steam or boil and bag rice is 30 to 50 cents, thensauce is 99cents a whole jar of mustard and or jasmine, or tomato. salmon is still cheap at certain stores. you could make the whole meal for more people for less than they charge for a bag of no! flavor rubber !!!!!!!

I had the mustard salmon and the Mahi meals, and my wife and I found them good. Quick and easy and good. If u found the meals subpar, it’s probably because they are cooked in the microwave. It is what it is. I say good enough and sort of a healthy option. I will be sad if they are phased out;)

My husband and I love love the mahi mahi, but we make two packages for the two of us because we love it so much! The coconut rice and sugar snap peas are delicious!

Guys, this food creeps me out. Please go to the store and buy these ingredients fresh. There is LITERALLY no reason not to.

It’s food. Food that’s been frozen. What’s creepy about that?

After you buy the ingredients “fresh” (which means trucked across the country, possibly frozen before-hand, etc.) you’d still need to prepare the recipe.

      >There is LITERALLY no reason not to.

I don’t think the word literally means what you think it means. Anyway, the reason is obvious – so one can have a prepared meal quickly, any time (courtesy of it being frozen and using the microwave for preparation). It’s something you can have on hand for when you need. You can’t have “fresh” on hand for when you need it. Bad weather, don’t want to go out and shop/go to restaurant? It’s there. Snowed in? It’s there. Sick in bed? Have a few of these stored in the back of the freezer and it’ll get you through until you’re better. Have a bad day at work and don’t feel like cooking a big meal? Use one of these. There are lots of reasons to purchase one of these meals.

I was lucky to find the salmon and talapia . As two seniors who are unable to get out, these diners are perfect for us; I do not understand what the fuss is about in the above comments. They knew they were not at the Ritz. . I am unable to find again. Would like to have several in the freezer for emergency usage. I bought in the ShopRite in Hammonton NJ. I asked them if they would get in a new supply. They did not. So, what is the story? Are you making them again, and where can I buy close to home.?

The jasmine rice tasted disgusting! My wife and I could not stomach it. The broccoli was decent and the fish was dry. However, the sauce for the Salmon perked up the taste and was fine. On a 1-10 scale, we give this meal a 6-7 as long as we don’t use the jasmine sauce. Again, the jasmine was DISGUSTING!

The salmon, green beans and sweet potatoes were horrible. The salmon was tasteless, hard to swallow. Just disgusting. The sweet potatoes had no taste at all. Would have been inedible but for the sauce. No objection to the green beans.. but expensive green beans, given the rest was not fit to eat. Do not buy!!!

    • July 20, 2012 at 9:35 pm

I wonder if yours was different than the one we got as the one we had did not have sweet potatoes in it or green beans. It had rice and broccoli.

The sesame sauce salmon comes with sweet potatoes, the honey dijon comes with broccoli.

I purchased for the first time a bag of the Salmon with Honey Dijon Mustard Sauce
steamable meal. I was disappointed because even though both pieces of salmon were
prepared in the microwave per the bag instructions, they ended up rubbery and not
flaky. By the way, I just noticed that the instructions on their website http://www.joeseatathome.com have been modified from what was printed on the bag…

I’ve tried the salmon one posted above, the cod, and the tilapia…big mistake b/c I bought them all at the same time. They were b1g1 free; I think I’m going to give the last one away.

Joe’s needs to go back to the drawing board on these meals. The fish and their accompanying sauces leave much to be desired (I LOVE seafood but I couldn’t even stomach the cod, it went in the trash). The veggies are always bland. I was very DISAPPOINTED, as I’m a frequent eater of quick meals in a bag. Don’t do it, if you’re contemplating trying these.

We tried the salmon, jasmine rice and broccoli and found it absolutely disgusting. The salmon was dried out, rubbery and had a white goo on it. The jasmine rice had a sauce to go with it that was slimy and tasted bad. We only took a lick of it and knew we couldn’t eat it. Contrary to the first ladiy’s comment the broccoli was the only thing edible, the rest went into the trash can. I find it hard to believe that anyone can sell these meals. Walmart should be ashamed selling us such poor quality food.

Me and my family tried 2 of these last night, the salmon with brocoli, and jasmine rice and the cod with lemon butter orzo and green beans. Both were TERRIBLE!!! We will NEVER buy these again…both went into the trash and we ended up at Taco Bell which wasn’t much better. VERY DISAPPOINTED IN LaPorte, Texas.

My wife & I tried the ginger salmon, green beans and sweet potatoes that we purchased at Wal-Mart. We will not try any of these entrees again! Absolutely no flavor …. the worst we have ever had!!!!!!!!! We both trashed it after a couple of bites.

I tried the salmon with sesame ginger sauce, green beans and sweet potatoes. It was horrible! Hubby and I both gave up after a couple of bites and made sandwiches. It was really disappointing because we both love salmon.

I just had the cod with the cajun butter sauce and it was delish, I also was concerned about the size of the cod, but there was plenty of food, and the green beans need to cook a little longer than the rest. I bought them at Brookshires they had a buy one get one for a penny wish I had bought more.

    • April 10, 2011 at 2:09 pm

I almost wonder then if the one I had was old. We got the cod one and it was horrible! The fish was really rubbery. I couldn’t even eat the fish.

I will have to try it again, maybe we like I said got an older one or a bad batch!

I got the cod, too, and it was horrible! I will never buy these “at home” dinners again. Eating at Joe’s is MUCH better. My fish was small, covered with white slime, YUK!!!

Worst thing I’ve ever tried! Tiny bits of fish were inedible, seasoning packet was left out of packaging, green beans had zero flavor. Will never buy one of these awful frozen messes again.

And it looks like it might be gluten-free even! I’ve been starting to look for convenience items that we’d be able to make.

Yes it is! It actually says it in big writing on the side of the bag 🙂
